Tokyo 2020
Road cycling will become one of the first sports to distribute medals this Saturday at the Olympic Games, which officially start on Friday with its traditional opening ceremony. These are the fifth Games for Alejandro Valverde, who has not missed an appointment of this type since Athens 2004. Since then he has participated in Beijing 2008 (Samuel Sánchez gold), London 2012 and Rio 2016.
The organizing committee of Tokyo 2020 has prepared a highly selective route, on a profile of 234 kilometers and the passes through Mount Fuji, Mikuni Pass and Kagosaka Pass as the most important points. Valverde is part of a powerful Spanish team together with Ion Izagirre, Gorka Izagirre, Omar Fraile and Jesús Herrada.
Statements to RFEC: «The route is very good for me. Momparler recognized it and told me that it suited me perfectly and the heat can also be good for me, although the humidity that will be there maybe not so much. I think it is a route with which we can be ahead».
«The Olympics is a very complicated race, because there are only 5 riders per team. The year I was very good was the one Samuel Sánchez won, but because of how the race developed I couldn’t be there, but for me Samuel’s gold is as if I had won because in the end the victory went to the National Team».
