Valverde triumphs in Mas de la Costa

The world champion keeps adding victories to his already big record. Alejandro Valverde won in Mas de la Costa, a terrible climb of 4 kilometers and ramps that even exceed the 20%, the final point to a fun seventh stage of La Vuelta.

Movistar Team started working before the ascent to the Salto del Caballo, the climb where the leader, Dylan Teuns, lost contact with the main group. Ten men kept 2 minutes before the port.

This difference was reduced until the first ramp of Mas de la Costa. Once caught, after a moment of tense calm with Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) in front, Nairo Quintana destroyed the group of favorites with an attack that only Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), Miguel Ángel López (Astana) and his partner in Movistar Team, Alejandro Valverde could follow.

The four stayed together until the final curves, where Bala showed again his power to win in front of Roglic and Lopez, who wears again the red jersey. The four are now the first of a general classification with only 27 second between them.

Statements: I want to thank the team for their great work. We have opted to win the stage and we have get it. Nairo has made a very good climb. I want to thank him. I was very confident, I knew I was very well. It is still a long way to go but for the moment it seems that the four of us (Roglic, López, Quintana and Valverde) are the strongest… for now ”.

“Winning a stage with the world champion’s jersey is always special. A victory in La Vuelta, at such a stage, with this kind of rivals, is a tremendous joy. Nairo could change the rhythm but both Roglic and Lopez held up well while I set my pace.
