Valverde wins the Vélo D’Or
For the first time in his career, Alejandro Valverde has been awarded with the Vélo D’Or. This prize is granted by the French magazine Vélo and recognizes the best cyclist of each season since 1992. Only the greatest can win this trophy and the Movistar Team rider has achieved it after 14 wins in 2018, highlighting the world championship achieved at the end of September in Innsbruck (Austria).
A jury of international experts has chosen the 38-year-old Murcian cyclist as the most outstanding rider of the season. He becomes the third Spanish to achieve it after Miguel Indurain and Alberto Contador. Precisely the Navarre champion was present at the award ceremony, held at the first Movistar Team 2019 meeting in Castillo de Gorraiz Hotel.
Statements: For me it is a very important prize, a huge satisfaction after winning the World Championship. It is a trophy that I will keep in a preferential place next to the rainbow jersey. It is also special that my name appears in the track record along with Indurain and Contador, two great cyclists in the history of Spanish cycling.
