Favorite son of the city of Murcia

The City of Murcia delivered this Saturday the award of Favorite Son of the city to Alejandro Valverde. The distinction, which recognizes the sports, personal and professional life of the cyclist, was granted at an event held at the Almudí Palace in the capital, which was attended by the mayor of the city council, José Ballesta.

Along with Alejandro Valverde, personalities like the painter José María Falgas, the famous sculptor Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz, the former president of Murcia Andrés Hernández Ros and the businessman Ángel Belmonte have also received this award.

The official press note highlighted the merits of Valverde with the following words: The City Council recognize the link of the cyclist Alejandro Valverde with the municipality of Murcia, where he was born on April 25, 1980. Since his debut as a professional in 2002, he has always been an example of sportsmanship, improvement and team awareness. Throughout these years, Valverde has been the ambassador of Murcia, since his land has always been present in every title, interview or event where he has been the protagonist.

Statements: It is a pleasure to receive this recognition. After compete in roads all over the world I’m looking forward to getting to Murcia to train here, to feel the warmth of Murcia, the climate, the cuisine … it’s something fundamental for me. I have been out other times to prepare myself for competitions but where I feel most comfortable is always here. I am still active, enjoying this beautiful sport, and wherever I go I will always say that I am from Murcia, taking Murcia to my heart.
