Example of fellowship in the Peyresourde
Alejandro Valverde keeps on making clear his role in a Tour de France in which Nairo Quintana is the Movistar Team leader. The Spaniard has worked for his team leader on the ramps of the Peyresourde; first, on the rise, he attacked at the end, and later in the descent, he gave all of himself in a group of favorites that chased the British Chris Froome, stage winner and new yellow jersey.
Valverde has put aside his options in this stage to minimize the difference with Froome who has finally reached the finish with only 13 seconds of advantage. Although this work and effort, Bala continues fifth in the overall, just 19 seconds behind the first place.
Quotes: “I attacked into the final slopes of the Peyresourde, just like I was told, and later on lost a bit of distance because I was struggling after such a strong move. When I dropped back, Nairo was still there with Froome; I didn’t see his move live, I just saw Froome away seconds later, and when I realized that was the situation, I went to the front of the group as fast as I could, even before the first turn of the descent, and went downhill with all I had left in the tank. The other GC contenders started working when it was too late; everyone wants to win the Tour, but at the end, we always end up working alone. Froome took a beautiful victory – hats off to him.”
