Valverde keeps fighting in the Giro

The first week of the race is completed and Alejandro Valverde has a sixth place in the Giro d’Italia, after two important tests as the day of the sterrato in Arezzo and the 40 km time trial in Chianti. The differences between the favorites to reach the pink jersey after the first nine days of competition are counted in just seconds.

The ambition of Valverde and his team mates in Movistar Team revolutionized the stage last Saturday, which finished in Arezzo after the ascent to Alpe di Poti, a port of dirty roads, where the Murcian tested his rivals’ legs with two hard attacks that selected the bunch and made suffer even Tom Dumoulin. Andrey Amador, Jose Joaquin Rojas and Jasha Sütterlin were a key element in the movements of their leader.

The long time trial of Chianti also left good feelings in Valverde, despite the rain complicated the route and they were forced to be careful in descent sections and excessively wet curves. Alejandro rolled with similar results as Nibali, Landa or Kruijswijk, confirming his sixth place before the break on Monday and a hard stage that ends in Sestola on Tuesday.
