A cold Liege with Dutch win
The weather was the key factor of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, race that won the Dutch Wouter Poels (Team Sky). Alejandro Valverde could not successfully complete the great work of all Movistar Team in a day in which the new hill of Naniot decided the outcome of the race, with the jump of a group consisting of Samuel Sanchez, Rui Costa, Michael Albasini and Poels. The four reached the finish line in time to contest the victory between them.
Valverde finished with the other top favorites in a 16th place that closes the competitions before its debut in less than two weeks in the Giro d’Italia.
Precisely with the Italian round in mind, Valverde confirms that his form is ideal for the race: “I want to thank the whole team – they were sensational all day, and it has more importance considering today’s conditions. Hailstorm at times, lots of snow, rain, temperatures below zero… it was really difficult. I ended the race with a strange feeling, yet still a good one because I’ve seen again that my legs feelt good leading up to the Giro”.
