Alejandro takes seven at the top of the Cumbre del Sol

He suffered a crash during the stage

Despite the fact he was the victim of a crash during the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España, Torrevieja- Cumbre del Sol Benitatxell, Alejandro took seven atop the Cumbre del Sol after he launched an aggressive attack in the stage final climb to make a selection in the favorites’ group.

The Spaniard is now the fifth overall, 1’09” behind new leader Dutchman Tom Dumoulin.

Alejandro’s quotes on the finishing line:

“I’m not someone who likes to make excuses, but after I crashed I thought I was going to be much worse, that abandon was maybe unavoidable. I will now go to the hospital to make radiographies because my collarbone is really hurting. I don’t think it is broken, in which case it would have been impossible to stay on the bike but I have the feeling a knife is hanging there. I have done everything that was possible in such conditions. I tried to anticipate attacks in the final climb to check how my legs were turning because the truth is that the first ascent they were not very well indeed. I thank my team for staying at my side all the time. Their support was very important to me. It was very difficult in those conditions to aim for stage victory, but I am happy I did not lost too much time and I hope my injury will evolve favorably.”
