Forty years of Vuelta a Murcia

One year before the first edition of the Vuelta a Murcia, Alejandro Valverde was born, the athlete who during the last two decades has raised the name of his land across the best competitions of the world. 40 years have passed – those that the Movistar Team rider will reached soon; the editions that the race accumulates next weekend-, and in that time both Alejandro and the race have become two of the biggest icons of the sport in its region abroad.

Loyal to his appointment, Valverde will be this Friday in Los Alcázares looking for the sixth victory here, where he has won three times in his five-day version and two times in his format as a classic. By 2020, the two-stage version used the last season is repeated, with a first day marked by the intermediate climb to the Alto de la Garapacha and the explosive ending in Caravaca de la Cruz and a second stage, already usual, ending in the Gran Vía of Murcia after overcoming the Cola del Caballo (3rd), the Alto de Espuña (1st), Collado Bermejo (ESP) and the Alto de Gebas (3rd) on a long journey through Sierra Espuña.

Valverde arrives at home heading the Movistar Team. He was near of the triumph in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, finishing second in the hard climb of Cullera. Enric Mas will also lead a powerful squad with Iñigo Elosegui, Nelson Oliveira, Antonio Pedrero, Albert Torres and Héctor Carretero.
