Movistar attacks in the Massif Central

The first contact with the mountain has been satisfactory for Alejandro Valverde and Movistar Team in the Tour de France. The Spaniard remains third in the overall of the French race after a hard day in the Massif Central, that finished in Le Lioran after climbing Pas de Peyrol and Col de Perthus. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) won the stage thanks to a long breakaway and now he also wears the leader’s yellow jersey.

Team Movistar accelerated when the group was approaching the first major climb of the day, reducing the bunch to thirty riders. Daniel Moreno, Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana were the only ones who resisted until the end, in which Alberto Contador lost contact with the group of favorites losing around thirty seconds. The other important cyclists reached the finish line at the same time.

Quotes: “The team has been great, we have worked well. It has been a quite demanding first day in the mountain and I’m happy. We have all suffered. The team worked for the profits. We have taken some time over Contador but we were looking for an acceleration of the race to see our feelings and our rivals’ feelings too”.
