15th place for Valverde in San Remo

The first major classic of the season ended with a 15th-place for Alejandro Valverde, within the group of main favorites who fought for the victory in Via Roma. The Spaniard had no choice in a Milan-San Remo which followed the usual script of this race: breakaway that reached many minutes in the first 200 kilometers, before the inertia of the peloton pulled down their movement, and a nervous approach to Cipressa. Then attacks in Poggio.

Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) crowned with just a couple of seconds over a group with Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) or Alejandro, who was helped throughout the race by all his fellow Movistar Team. From Carlos Betancur, who debuted with his new colors, to Fran Ventoso, in charge of bringing him in a good position in the crucial area of this Classicissima.

Valverde will now take a break from the competition, although he will make a stage to continue preparing their next two major objectives: Fleche Wallonne – Liège-Bastogne-Liège and its debut in the Giro d’Italia. Thus, his next commitment will be the Vuelta a Castilla y León (April 15-17).
